Privacy Policy

Overview
OpsCanary is designed to collect as little data as possible. We do not require accounts, we do not track you across the web, and we do not sell your data to anyone. This policy explains what we do collect and why.
Data we collect
Device ID (anonymous): When you first visit, a random UUID is stored in your browser's localStorage. This ID has no personal information attached to it. It is used to remember your reading history, quiz progress, bookmarks, and daily brief. It is never linked to your identity.
Email address (optional): If you subscribe to our newsletter, we store your email address. This is entirely voluntary. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email we send.
Usage data: We record which articles you read and how you answered quiz questions. This is stored against your anonymous device ID, not your identity. We use this to personalise your daily brief and quiz difficulty.
Data we do NOT collect
- Your name
- Your location or IP address (beyond what Cloudflare logs for security)
- Cookies (we use localStorage only)
- Tracking pixels or third-party analytics
- Payment information (we do not handle payments directly)
Third-party services
We use the following third-party services to operate the platform:
- OpenAI: Used to generate article summaries from official documentation. Content (not user data) is sent to OpenAI's API.
- Supabase: Our database provider. Stores articles, anonymous user progress, and newsletter subscribers.
- Railway: Our backend hosting provider.
- Vercel: Our web hosting provider.
- Cloudflare: CDN and DDoS protection. May log IP addresses for security purposes per their own privacy policy.
Newsletter
If you subscribe to our newsletter, your email is stored in our database and used only to send you the daily DevOps digest. We do not share email addresses with third parties. You can unsubscribe at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in any email, or by contacting us directly.
Data retention
Anonymous device data (reading history, quiz progress) is retained indefinitely as it contains no personal information. Email addresses for newsletter subscribers are retained until you unsubscribe, at which point they are marked as unsubscribed and no further emails are sent.
Your rights (GDPR)
If you are in the EU or UK, you have the right to access, rectify, or delete your data. Since most of our data is anonymous (device ID only), deletion typically means clearing your localStorage. For newsletter subscribers, you can request deletion of your email by contacting us.
